Experimental professions

These professions (Article 36a professions) are temporarily included in the BIG register and are granted certain independent powers for a period of five years. For those consulting the BIG register, it is clearly indicated which professions are temporarily registered.

From experiment to BIG profession

A professional with an experimental profession may independently perform certain designated reserved acts during this period. The performance of reserved acts is monitored during the experimental period and an evaluation study is conducted. If this shows that the registration ensures effective (patient satisfaction) and efficient (care tasks are performed by the right professional) care, the experimental profession is included in the BIG register as an article 3 profession and definitive independence is thus granted. If the experiment shows that there is still insufficient added value, the registration in the BIG register will lapse. The Minister for Medical Care and Sport will make the final decision.

The professions

The phase an experimental profession is in and the moment at which the experimental period starts varies per profession.

For all experimental professions it applies that:

  • have a legally protected professional title;
  • must apply for a BIG registration and be temporarily BIG registered;
  • are subject to disciplinary law;
  • temporarily be allowed to perform certain reserved acts independently.
